A & L has obtained
licensing from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on remediation patents
held by the government. A & L Underground has operating offices
throughout the United States and uses the advanced technology for In-site
methods of remediation and cleaning of contaminated groundwater. The
government developed this sophisticated remediation technology utilizing
horizontal directional drilling at the Savannah River site at Aiken,
South Carolina. Parallel drills through the contaminated plumes provide
an effective avenue for removal of hazards. The technique utilizing
directional drilling is particularly useful over large areas or where
irregular plume geometry is present and can be more economical than
conventional technique.

CAPABILITIES AND SERVICES
With
trench-less technology, environmentally sensitive areas can be addressed
with minimal disruption and at tremendous cost savings. A & L owns
and operates directional drilling rigs from the very large to the small
mini-rig class, all of which are available to the environmental
community.
Horizontal wells also provide an effective
method for removal of methane gas and enhancing leach-ate collection
systems without sacrificing the integrity of the landfill or other
containment systems.
An
area of growing importance is the environmental impact of reconditioning
pipelines laden with asbestos coating. A & L offers a complete
asbestos abatement service with teams of trained, certified and licensed
personnel.

PROJECTS
Brookhaven National Laboratories
Brookhaven National Laboratories identified a tritium
plume that was flowing southward from their High Flux Beam Reactor. Brookhaven and the DOE felt that the
most effective way to handle the problem would be to install horizontal
wells for groundwater collection and monitoring. A & L Underground was selected to
administer the horizontal drilling because of the willingness to respond
immediately, their good support systems and their strong track record in
New York.
“Blind holes” or one-ended horizontal wells, we
drilled under the Reactor along the north and south side of the Reactor
spent fuel canal. The canal,
located inside the reactor, measured 49 feet long and 8 feet wide. The eastern end was 20 feet deep and
the western end was 30 feet deep.
Since
no one knew the precise level of contamination prior to the drills,
safety and training were extremely critical. Prior to drilling each crew member
obtained radiation worker permits and completed Radiation Worker I and II
training.

PROJECTS
Fluor
Daniels GTI at JFK Airport
Remediation at JFK International Airport was necessary
to clean up underground contamination caused by jet fuel spilled over the
years during refueling operations at gate areas.
A
& L was hired to install 10 horizontal wells under the tarmac at the
A-1 Delta Terminal. The air sparging and soil vapor extraction
project was constructed on a 24-hour, five days a week basis and although
impacted by severe weather conditions during the harsh northeast winter
of 1996, the project was completed well ahead of Fluor Daniel’s
schedule. By using horizontal directional drilling, there was no
disruption of air traffic whatsoever.
